For Immediate Release March 23, 2005 PIO 086-05/rdo Public Invited to Open House Meetings On Four Mile Run Restoration Project The public is invited to attend two open house meetings to discuss the Master Plan for the restoration of the lower section of Four Mile Run. The first meeting will be held on Saturday, April 16, from 9:30 am to noon at the Drew Model Elementary School, 3500 23rd St., South, in Arlington; and the second meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 20, from 7 to 9:30 pm at the Cora Kelly Elementary School, 3600 Commonwealth Ave., in Alexandria. During the meetings, the initial design concepts for the Master Plan, which incorporate public input from recent meetings and workshops, will be available for review by the public. Four Mile Run is a neighborhood watershed that runs from I-395 at the upstream end to the mouth at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. A combined effort of citizens and staff from the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, and Congressman James Moran's Office has been coordinating environmental restoration and urban planning focused on the channel portion of Four Mile Run. Restoring Four Mile Run would result in the enhancement of aquatic (in-stream) and riparian (adjacent-to-stream) habitats and the establishment of the run as a focal point reflecting its value as a community resource. For more information on Four Mile Run, call Aileen Winquist at 703.228.3610; e-mail her at awinquist@arlingtonva.us; or visit www.novaregion.org/restoration.htm. # # # |
