Alexandria’s Chinquapin Park Recreation Center
Offers Acting Classes for Adults

Have you ever had the desire to be an actor? The City of Alexandria’s Recreation and Parks Department offers classes that may be for you.

In the Craft of Acting class students will receive instruction in a wide variety of acting techniques that include the Stanislavisky and Sandi Shurin’s methods. Instructor Barbara Kay is a veteran Equity Actor, teacher and director. Kay was schooled in the craft of acting at the Master Institute for the United Arts, the Metropolitan Opera NYC, the Actors Studio, Stella Adler’s Conservatory of Acting, School of the Actor’s Company Irene Daily NYC and trained with teacher Michael Eagan. Kay’s experience includes broadcasting at radio station WPAT in Patterson, NJ, as well as Broadway and off-Broadway productions: Lorna in Clifford Oddet’s “Golden Boy,” Linda in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” Ophelia in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Karen in Lillian Hellcats’s “The Children’s Hour.

The class meets at the Nannie J. Lee Memorial Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St., for six weeks from 1 to 3 pm beginning April 16. The cost of the class is $36.

In the new Intro to Improv, designed for actors and non-actors alike, students will learn the basic skills needed as an actor. Through exercises in awareness, trust, and “going with your gut”, students create scenes and stories through a variety of short-form improvisational games. In a safe, supportive atmosphere, students learn how to become more spontaneous and comfortable with verbal, emotional, and physical expression. No memorization required! Instructor Rob Maro holds a master of arts degree from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. The class meets at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St., for eight weeks from 7:30 to 9:30 pm beginning April 18. The cost of the class is $90 for City of Alexandria residents and $110 for nonresidents.
