City of Alexandria Recognizes
Pediatric Dental Awareness

As February and Pediatric Dental Awareness Month draw to a close, the Alexandria Health Department reminds residents of the importance of good oral hygiene to overall health status. Eligible patients are welcome to seek preventive care at the new 4480 King Street facility.

According to the Director of Dental Services, Michael Hurley, DDS, MD, a 25-plus year veteran with the department, “Most tooth decay and gum disease are entirely preventable. Good dental health means more than white, straight teeth and neglecting your oral health can truly bring down your overall health.”

“Preventive dental care,” according to Charles Konigsberg, Jr., MD, MPH, Health Director for the City of Alexandria, “Is a matter of critical importance.” In 2004, the health department initiated a pilot program that treated all eligible second graders in two elementary schools within the City. These children, many of whom had never had any type of dental exam, were given preliminary exams, preventive sealants, preventive education, and follow-up care information. Using portable equipment enabled dental staff to easily treat the children. “It’s a program we would like to expand,” said Dr. Hurley, “second grade being a key time to protect molar teeth that are essential to preserving a functional and attractive dentition for a lifetime.”

“A Healthy Smile is Always in Style” is the theme of Pediatric Dental Awareness month. Since 1941, this national observance has taken place to remind families of the important role dental health plays in a person’s overall health status.

The American Dental Association, along with the Alexandria Health Department, recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

- Brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Gently brush the surface of your tongue after brushing teeth.
- Brush teeth for two minutes, making sure to include inside and outside of all teeth and their chewing surfaces.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months.
- Clean between teeth after meals and at bedtime with floss. By the time children are age 10, they should be flossing daily.
