Alexandria City Council Approves
Redevelopment of Shopping Center in West End

The Alexandria City Council has approved the redevelopment of the 10.2-acre Foxchase Shopping Center to create a town center which better accommodates pedestrians and provides quality building design and landscaping. The plan, approved by Council on Feb. 12, calls for removal of about 40 percent of the current retail space including an adult movie theater, and replacing that space with a new grocery store and other new retail. The project will feature high quality building design and materials which will create buildings of a scale that are compatible with a low scale town center, plus an enhanced entrance and perimeter to Holmes Run Park just east of the shopping center.

“The redeveloped shopping center will be a positive improvement for residents, particularly in the West End,” said Mayor William D. Euille. “In addition, this project is consistent with one of the City’s goals which is to provide Quality Development and Redevelopment that is Well Planned and Consistent with Alexandria’s Vision,” he said. “ This project will balance the needs of existing businesses and adequate parking with significant improvements such as safer sidewalks and crossings for pedestrians, more attractive landscaping and a new grocery store, Harris Teeter.”

The shopping center, built in the 1950s, is located in the 4000 block of Duke Street at the intersection of Duke and Jordan. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
