Alexandria Youth Council Educates Local Teenagers
About Safe Driving with Poster Contest

In an effort to educate teenagers about safe driving, the Alexandria Youth Council is sponsoring a poster contest for local high school students. Students in grades 9 through 12 who attend private and public schools in the City are eligible to enter. The contest’s theme is “Teens and Driving, Preventing Accidents.” Entries must be submitted to the administrative office of the student’s school by the close of the day on Friday, Feb. 25.

Winners will be announced and presented prizes at the Teen Forum from 9 am to noon on Saturday, March 12, at the Minnie Howard School, 3801 W. Braddock Rd. Prizes will be awarded for 1st Place – $300 and the poster design and slogan will be used in the Teen Driving Campaign; 2nd Place – $200; and 3rd Place and honorable mentions – $100.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 6,000 teens die in motor vehicle crashes each year. Since the 2004-2005 school year began, 17 young people have died in car accidents in the Washington, DC, area.

The Alexandria Youth Council serves as a forum for local youth to meet, discuss issues, and collectively devise constructive strategies for the positive development of young people in the City.

For more information on the contest or to receive an application form, call Karen Parker Thompson of the Alexandria City Public Schools at 703.824.6639 or e-mail karen.parker.thompson@acps.k12.va.us.
