City of Alexandria to Host Crew Members of the
USS ALEXANDRIA (SSN 757)

On Feb. 18 – 21, the City of Alexandria will host the Commanding Officer and eight crew members of the USS ALEXANDRIA (SSN 757) who will participate in events commemorating George Washington’s birthday. The USS Alexandria Liaison Committee, which is responsible for maintaining a long term relationship between the crew and families of the USS Alexandria, and the residents of Alexandria, have arranged the visit.

The USS ALEXANDRIA is a Los Angeles Class submarine that was commissioned on June 29, 2001. The ship is 360 feet long, 33 feet in diameter and weighs 7,000 tons and has the latest weapons control and sonar systems in the submarine force.

The ship’s name was chosen by the wife of Vice Admiral Glenwood Clark, Mrs. Myrtle “Tookie” Clark, in honor of the City of Alexandria, VA, where she resided at the time and Alexandria, LA, 100 miles from her childhood home of Breaux Bridge, LA Because it is named after these two cities, the Ship’s motto is “Twice as Strong” and proudly reflects maps of each state on its seal. The ship recently completed a six month mission where she made history by being the first SSN to transit from the Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean from under the polar cap.

Crew members will attend the George Washington Birthday Ball, participate in the George Washington Birthday Parade on Feb. 21, and attend other weekend activities.
