City of Alexandria Hosts Day of Relaxation for Foster Mothers

The City of Alexandria will host a day of stress relief and rejuvenation for local foster mothers at 10:30 am on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Department of Human Services, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave. The event, which is sponsored by the Department of Human Services, seeks to provide stress relief and relaxation opportunities for foster mothers. Foster mothers will receive facials and make overs as well as attend workshops in journal writing and stress reduction.

Each year, the Department of Human Services hosts three annual events to thank and honor City foster families.

The City of Alexandria has over 200 children in foster care with only about 100 licensed foster homes in Alexandria and the surrounding area. Children who do not live in one of the City’s licensed foster homes live in therapeutic foster homes contracted with private agencies, in residential facilities or independent living programs. Some of Alexandria’s foster children are also enrolled in college and are living on campus. In Virginia, a child can remain in foster care until the age of 21 if the child remains in college or a job training program.

For more information, call Karen Chaudhry at the City’s Department of Human Services at 703.838.0700.
