Alexandria Police Pursue Carjacking Suspect;
Pentagon Officer Injured, Suspect in Custody
Alexandria police are investigating a carjacking that ended near the Pentagon with a police officer injured and the suspect in custody. At 8:09 a.m., Alexandria police received a 911 call from a man who stated he was being carjacked. Officers responded to the scene in the 1000 block of North Henry Street and determined that the victim’s car, a four-door 2002 Cadillac, had been stolen.
The victim, a 65-year-old Maryland man, told police he was getting into his car in the McDonald’s parking lot when the suspect approached him. The suspect struck the victim, implied he had a weapon and then robbed the victim of his car.
Officers located the stolen car and began to follow it through Del Ray. When the suspect didn’t stop, officers pursued it from Alexandria into south Arlington and then onto northbound I-395. The pursuit continued and Alexandria officers were assisted by Virginia State troopers and a Fairfax County police helicopter. The suspect vehicle exited I-395 near the Pentagon and struck a Pentagon police officer who was on foot.
When the suspect continued driving, an Alexandria police cruiser rammed the Cadillac on the Washington Boulevard ramp. At that point, Alexandria, Virginia State and Pentagon police took the suspect into custody.
Both the injured officer and the suspect, who was also injured, were transported by helicopter to local hospitals. Alexandria police have a warrant for the suspect, a 22-year-old man of no fixed address, charging him with Robbery-Carjacking.
Arlington County and Pentagon police are investigating the offenses in their jurisdictions.
