For Immediate Release January 11, 2005 PIO 013-05/rdo MEDIA ADVISORY Chatham Square Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony New Community Replaces Former Samuel Madden Homes Public Housing What: The Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA), the City of Alexandria, and Eakin/Youngentob Associates have scheduled a scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Chatham Square, a new, mixed-income community that replaces the former Samuel Madden Homes (Downtown) public housing complex in Alexandria. Who: ARHA Chairman A. Melvin Miller and Chief Executive Officer William M. Dearman; City of Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille; Eakin/Youngentob Associates President Robert Youngentob; Virginia Governor Mark Warner and Congressman Jim Moran are invited guest speakers. When: Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 10 am (RAIN OR SHINE) Where: The event will take place at Cook Street (just south of Pendleton Street) between N. Pitt Street and N. Royal Street. Why: This project is an innovative public-private partnership resulting in 152-residential units on the former Samuel Madden site, 52 of which will be affordable rental homes operated as public housing units, and 100 of which will be market-rate townhouses for sale to the public. In addition, 48 other public housing units will be constructed on three other sites in the City. The new community replaces the former 100-unit Samuel Madden Homes, which was built in the 1940s.
