Seven People Injured in Assault at Senior Citizen Facility;
Alexandria Police Arrest Employee

Alexandria police are investigating a felonious assault at a senior citizen home which left seven people injured. Today, at 2:43 p.m., police and medics responded to the Goodwin House at 4800 Fillmore Avenue in the West End of Alexandria after an employee reported that another staff member was attacking several people there.

Investigation indicates that the suspect, a 30-year-old Alexandria man who works on the housekeeping staff, was armed with a knife and had cut people in an office, hallway and living quarters on the second floor. Seven people, including four residents in their 80s and 90s, were injured before a visitor disarmed the suspect.

When police arrived, the suspect punched an officer before being subdued. The suspect is now in police custody but has not been formally charged.

The victims, including two visitors and one employee, were transported by ambulance to Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax hospitals. None of the injuries is believed to be life-threatening. One victim refused treatment and was not taken to a hospital.

A motive for the attack is unknown at this time.
