Programs Scheduled to Honor Martin Luther King Jr.


The public is invited to participate in programs in Alexandria in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. The 32nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program is scheduled for 7:30 pm on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 1401 Duke St. Rev. Carla Thompson of the Vicar, Meade Memorial Episcopal Church will serve as the ceremony’s guest speaker. The event is sponsored by the City of Alexandria in cooperation with local religious, civic and social organizations. Other activities during the month include:

C Sunday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 pm: Salute to the Life of Dr. King at the Victory Temple Missionary Baptist Church, 2762 Duke St.. The guest speaker is Rev. Dr. Tom A. Bailey. The event is sponsored by the Baptist Ministers’ Conference.

C Friday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 pm: Youth Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Departmental Progressive Club, 411 Gibbon St.. The event is sponsored by the Departmental Progressive Club.

C Sunday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 4 pm: Ninth Annual Step Towards Race Unity at Landmark Mall/Center Court Atrium, 5801 Duke St. The event is sponsored by the Alexandria Bahl’ Assembly.

C Monday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 3 pm: Martin Luther King Media Presentation & Exhibit at City Hall, 301 King St., in the Vola Lawson Lobby, first floor. The event is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage, Inc., the Alumni Association of Parker-Gray High School, and the Annie B. Rose Supporters.
