Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Scheduled for Chatham Square
Alexandria's Newest, Mixed-Income Community
Chatham Square Replaces Former Samuel Madden Homes

The Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, the City of Alexandria, and Eakin/Youngentob Associates have scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Chatham Square, a new, mixed-income community that replaces the former Samuel Madden Homes (Downtown) public housing complex in Alexandria. The ceremony will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Cook Street (just south of Pendleton Street) between N. Pitt Street and N. Royal Street. The more than 60-year-old Samuel Madden Homes public housing complex has been redeveloped into a mixed, market-rate and subsidized housing community.

This project is an innovative public-private partnership resulting in 152-residential units on the former Samuel Madden site, 52 of which will be affordable rental homes operated as public housing units, and 100 of which will be market-rate townhouses for sale to the public. In addition, 48 other public housing units will be constructed on three other sites in the City. The new public housing was funded with a mix of federal, state, local and private monies. Eakin/Youngentob Associates served as the developer and general contractor of the Chatham Square project.

The former 100-unit Samuel Madden Homes was built in the 1940s. After years of discussions about how to redevelop the property, it was torn down in July 2003.
