City Honors Late Barbara Gilley,
Champion of Rights of Persons with Disabilities


The Alexandria City Council will join the Alexandria Commission on Persons With Disabilities for a ceremony honoring the life and accomplishments of the late Barbara Gilley who served as the past chairperson of the Alexandria Commission on Persons With Disabilities. The ceremony will take place from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 11, in the Vola Lawson Lobby, City Hall, 301 King St., first floor.

The ceremony recognizes Ms. Gilley for serving as a lifelong champion of the rights of persons with disabilities. She was chairperson of the Alexandria Commission on Persons With Disabilities from 1991 to 1993. City Council members will present a proclamation in her honor following the memorial service.

The City Council appoints the members of the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities. The commission researches programs and legislation relating to the physically and mentally handicapped and advises City Council and members of the community about these programs and laws. It serves as the local Disabilities Services Board and a forum for the disabled.
Ms. Gilley passed away at the age of 55 in December.
