For Immediate Release December 9, 2004 PIO 294-04/rdo National Association Honors New Site of Two City Agencies The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) has presented the new building of the Alexandria Health Department and the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse with an Award of Merit for public space interiors. The association recognizes the new site as one of many winners of this year’s 18th Annual Best of NAIOP Awards. The award is the first design honor for the new building at 4480 King St. The new building serves as home to more than 100 Health Department employees and provides services such as children’s health and immunization, child and adult dental care, environmental health, family planning and well-women care, HIV/STD counseling and testing, and TB control and screening. The Health Department also operates the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program and the Parent-Infant Education Program that teaches child development. The Alexandria Health Department moved to its new location after 60 years at 517 N. St. Asaph St. The move helps the agency provide better programs and services at a location more convenient for the population that is served the most. The new building includes additional patient parking as well as transportation by DASH and Metro buses, a shuttle bus from Braddock Road Metro Station, and the Health Department van. The Health Department shares its new location with the City’s Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse, which runs the West End Clubhouse, a program that offers advocacy, vocational services, and family support services to clients. The NAIOP is a national association of more than 11,000 members and an extensive network of 49 chapters that represent the interests of developers and owners of industrial, office and related commercial real estate throughout North America.
