For Immediate Release December 1, 2004 PIO 288-04/rdo Alexandria Farmer’s Market Opens on Friday During Week of Christmas The Alexandria Farmer’s Market will open on Friday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve), from 5 to 10 am at Market Square in Old Town, 301 King St., due to the Christmas Holiday on Saturday, Dec. 25. The Farmer’s Market is regularly open year round on Saturdays. Parking is free in the garage underneath Market Square during hours of the Farmer’s Market. People who come to the Alexandria Farmer’s Market find themselves in a busy plaza where local farmers and artists have been selling their products since 1753. Old Town Alexandria’s Market Square is thought to be one of the nation’s oldest continually operating farmer’s markets, serving as a primary way Alexandria residents have typically obtained their meat, dairy, fish, fruits and vegetables. George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at the Farmer’s Market. Today, the market offers Alexandrians a way to reconnect to the past, while participating in an ongoing local and national tradition. According to an 1876 edition of the Alexandria Gazette, some things have not change because “to sell it here you’ve got to grow it or make it at home.” For more information on the Farmer’s Market, call 703.838.5006. # # # |
