Groundbreaking for TC Williams High School
Is Scheduled for December 4

Groundbreaking for Alexandria’s new T.C. Williams High School will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 3:30 p.m. The current T.C. Williams was built in 1965 and has served the Alexandria community and tens of thousands of students well. T.C. Williams is the lone high school in Alexandria City Public Schools.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the grassy area in front of the career center wing at T.C. Williams and a reception will follow in the school's main lobby. The program will feature remarks by Mayor Bill Euille and School Board Chairman Mark Wilkoff and a musical performance by the T.C. Williams chorus. Many city and state officials are expected to attend.

The 461,000 square-foot high school, scheduled for opening in September 2007, will cost approximately $88 million to build and have a capacity of 2,500 students in grades 10 through 12. The three-story school, designed by Moseley Architects of Richmond, Va., will feature a 1,200-seat auditorium, a 3,000-seat gymnasium, a planetarium, and a parking deck with 416 spaces.

In addition, ACPS is committed to a "Green T.C. Williams" which will result in certification from the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Activities during the construction process, from educating the subcontractors, to building demolition, to recycling and sorting demolition materials, to final building commissioning are all necessary for certification as a silver LEED project.

The general contractor is Hensel Phelps of Greely, Co., and the ACPS construction team will manage the project.
