For Immediate Release November 15, 2004 PIO 257-04/rdo Alexandria Lights Tree to Officially Bring in Holiday Season National Capitol Tree Follows with Stop at City The City of Alexandria will officially bring in the holiday season with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Market Square, 301 King St., on Friday, Nov. 26, at 7 pm. Festivities at the yearly event include greetings from Mayor William “Bill” Euille and Santa Claus along with musical entertainment and other holiday activities. A Springfield, VA resident donated a Leyland Cypress for this year’s holiday tree. For more information on the ceremony, call 703.883.4686. Following the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, the City will host a visit by the National Capitol Tree Visits Alexandria on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 1:30 pm at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive. The National Capitol Tree will be making its final stops before arriving at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. at 10 am on Monday, Nov. 29. The ceremony is free to the public. This year’s National Capitol Tree is a 70-foot, red spruce from Highland County on the Warm Springs Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest. The tree will be lit every evening from Dec. 9 through Jan. 1 from sundown until 11 pm. The event marks the first time Virginia has been selected to provide a holiday tree to grace the lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
