For Immediate Release October 13, 2004 PIO 249-04/rdo Mayor and Economic Opportunities Commission Commemorate 40th Anniversary of War on Poverty and 1964 Economic Opportunity Act Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille will join the City’s Economic Opportunities Commission in a commemoration ceremony recognizing the 40th anniversary of the country’s War on Poverty and the passage of the Economic Opportunity Act. The ceremony will be held at City Hall, 301 King St., in the Vola Lawson Lobby, first floor, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 5:30 pm. Mayor Euille and other City leaders will pay tribute to those who made the War on Poverty possible and honor local residents and organizations that continue to struggle to create opportunities for all citizens. President Lyndon B. Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1964 when he signed unprecedented legislation that mobilized federal, state and local efforts to expand the American dream to urban and rural communities impacted by abject poverty. President Johnson understood the deprivation experienced by generation after generation of Americans in communities throughout the Appalachia and in the inner cities. He believed society could and must improve the condition of the poor throughout the country. City Council appoints members of the Economic Opportunities Commission. The commission develops and recommends policies and programs that provide outreach and assistance to low-income residents. For more information, call Nelson Smith at 703.838.0901. # # # |
