City’s Office on Women Recognizes
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The City of Alexandria’s Office on Women will recognize October as national Domestic Violence Awareness Month with events and activities. Volunteers from the Office on Women’s Domestic Violence Program will distribute wish lists to shoppers for items that can be purchased at Target and donated to the battered women’s shelter on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Target Store in the Potomac Yard Shopping Center, 3101 Jefferson Davis Hwy.
Victims of domestic violence will be remembered at a candlelight vigil on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7 pm at Market Square, 301 King St.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity, which was observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The first Day of Unity sought to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The first Domestic Violence Month was observed in October 1987.
