Public Hearing Scheduled for Oct. 16
On Open Space Priority List Action Plan

The Alexandria City Council will hold a public hearing on Saturday, Oct. 16, to receive public comment on the proposed Open Space Priority List Action Plan. The public hearing will be held during the regularly scheduled Saturday public hearing, which begins at 9:30 am in the Council Chamber, 2nd floor of City Hall, 301 King St.

The action plan proposes a number of actions to be taken to protect some or all of the open space characteristics of the properties included in the open space priority list that City Council adopted last June. The plan also sets out the recommended time frame for these actions to take place, and recommends the issuance of $10 million in general obligation bonds for open space acquisitions.

Following the public hearing, City Council will adopt and begin implementation of the proposed Open Space Priority List Action Plan at its legislative meeting on Oct. 26.

The list of Immediate Priority Sites includes ten properties. There are a series of seven parcels along the Potomac River waterfront between King and Duke streets and property along the waterfront behind Hunting Towers (now Hunting Point) to be used as a public access easement for an alignment for the Mount Vernon bike trail. The Action Plan also recommends that the City begin a planning process for the area of the waterfront bounded by Queen, Union, and Wolfe streets and the Potomac River. Copies of the open space priority list are available in the City’s Clerk’s Office, Room 2300, City Hall.

Anyone wishing to speak should complete a speaker's form before or at the hearing. These forms are available in the City Clerk's Office, Room 2300, City Hall. Speaking requests can also be made directly to the City Clerk by e-mail at jackie.henderson@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.838.4500. Individuals with disabilities who require assistance or individuals needing special arrangements, such as translation services or language interpreters, to participate in the City Council meeting may call the City Clerk at 703.838.4500 (TTY/TDD 703.838.5056). A 48-hour notice is needed for special arrangements, so that the proper arrangements may be made.
