Project Discovery Alexandria Holds 9th Annual Walkathon
Proceeds Help Eligible Low-Income and First-Generation Students Attend College

Project Discovery Alexandria will hold its 9th annual “Walk for the Future: Taking the Right Steps for College” walkathon on Saturday, Oct. 2. The walkathon begins at 9 am with participants registering for the event at the Minnie Howard School, 3801 W. Braddock Rd. Project Discovery will also conduct a mini-college fair at the registration site.

The walkathon starts at the Minnie Howard School, proceeds along West Braddock Road, and ends with a free picnic at Fort Ward Park, 4301 W. Braddock Rd. Attorney Clyde Bailey, a past president of the National Bar Association, will serve as the event’s honorary chairperson.

Project Discovery will use proceeds from the fundraiser to support program activities and scholarships.

Project Discovery is administered through the Alexandria Department of Human Services and the Alexandria City Public Schools. The program prepares and motivates low-income and first-generation, college-bound students to pursue post-secondary education.

The program helps eligible students who attend T.C. Williams High School and the Minnie Howard School learn about the college admissions and the financial aid process through workshops and visits to college campuses throughout the region. It also offers book scholarships to selected participating students and alumni.

Since 1985, Project Discovery has helped over 1,700 Alexandria students attend college or technical school.

For more information or to register for the walkathon, call Lesa Gilbert, Project Discovery Coordinator, at 703.838.0915.
