Watch Mailbox Mid-August
Personal Property Tax Bill, City Decal in One Envelope

In mid-August, most Alexandrians will receive one, instead of two, mailings from the City containing their personal property tax bill and vehicle decal. This change will make it easier and less time consuming for residents to obtain and pay for vehicle decals. In the past, residents received two mailings from the City: the first envelope contained the invoice, and once the taxes and any fees were paid, residents received another envelope with the decal. In an effort to improve customer service, and to streamline the process, (saving taxpayer and City time and expense) Alexandria residents will receive one envelope this year containing both their vehicle decal and an invoice for that decal.

The deadline for payment of the personal property tax and decal fee remains the same as in past years: Oct. 5, 2004. Under the City’s new customer service initiative, most tax bills will include a red 2004 vehicle decal attached to the bill itself. The new decals are also designed to be much easier to remove from vehicle windshields.

Owners of motorcycles, trailers and taxicabs will receive a different personal property tax mailing from the City. They will continue to receive the tax bill first and after payment will receive the decal. The decal for these vehicles is designed differently than the decal for most vehicles.

Upon receipt of the vehicle decal, residents should carefully peel the decal from the bill and place it on the appropriate vehicle windshield. (Note: residents who have more than one vehicle should make sure the correct decal is placed on the correct vehicle). Residents are also reminded that all tax and decal fees and zone parking permit fees must be paid no later than Oct. 5, 2004. Failure to pay on time, even though decals have already been mailed, will result in penalties, interest and collection actions.

Save time: pay online

The easiest way to pay for personal property taxes and decal fees is online,

Taxes and fees may also be paid via U.S. Mail using the address provided. Payment is also accepted at City Hall, 301 King St. Whichever way you choose, the deadline is Oct. 5.

Residents who have recently notified the City that their vehicle has been sold or already moved from the City should not receive a decal with the bill. If the enclosed bill does not properly reflect a move or sold date, return the decal and bill and provide the move or sell date. Residents with delinquent taxes or unpaid parking tickets are ineligible to receive a decal until all amounts past due are paid. These tax bills will not include blue decals.

Residents new to the City of Alexandria or those who recently purchased a vehicle have 30 days to register their vehicle with the City of Alexandria and to purchase a decal.
