Police Seek Victim of Attempted Carjacking

Alexandria police are seeking a victim of a carjacking attempt that occurred Sunday night in the West End. A suspect, 29-year-old Noureddine Chtaini of Northwest Washington, D.C., is in custody on other charges, but police recently learned of another offense he may have committed.

On July 11, around 8:30 p.m., Metropolitan police pursued a Mercedes occupied by two suspects into Alexandria. The vehicle stopped at the intersection of Quantrell and Lincolnia avenues and two suspects got out. One fled and the other, Chtaini, attempted to carjack a man in a Honda. The victim complied and got out of the Honda, but Chtaini returned to the Mercedes and left the Honda behind.

Police learned that the suspect then drove to the area of Quantrell Avenue and North Armistead Street and got out of the Mercedes again. A flight officer who was following the pursuit from the MPD helicopter observed Chtaini attempting to carjack another victim. According to the MPD flight officer, Chtaini ran up to the driver’s side of a car and tried to get in. The driver began to drive away but Chtaini held on and was dragged a short distance. Chtaini let go and then returned to the Mercedes. He drove to a nearby condominium complex where he was apprehended a short time later.

So far, the victim of this carjacking attempt has not reported the incident to police. Investigators are urging this victim to come forward now. The victim or anyone who may have witnessed this offense is asked to contact Detective Jamie Bridgeman at 703.838.4082.

Chtaini is charged with Armed Carjacking, two counts of Statutory Burglary, Grand Larceny Auto, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. He is being held without bond at the Alexandria jail.

Note: A photo of Chtaini cannot be released yet due to the ongoing investigation.
