Alexandria Installs Banners Along Old Town’s King Street

Vertical banners (pictured below) identifying Old Town were installed on King Street from the waterfront to the King Street Metrorail station. The banners are intended to visually enliven King Street, to help in identifying Old Town Alexandria’s principal “main street” retail center for shoppers, as well as to serve as a pathfinding aid for tourists who have come to Alexandria via the King Street Metrorail station..

The banners are part of a pilot program that was created by action of the City Council last month and is jointly funded by the Alexandria City government, the King Street Metro Enterprise Team, and the Old Town Business Association.

The design of a colonial ship under sail with the words “Old Town” on the banner was created by the Alexandria-based design firm Bremer and Goris Communications. After gauging reaction to the banners and experiencing the program operations during the summer and the fall, the City will evaluate whether or not to continue the banner program in 2005, as well as whether or where to expand the program beyond King Street.

Councilman Rob Krupicka who had asked that staff research the possibility of a banner program earlier in the year stated, “The banners look great. I really appreciate the citizens and business owners who brought the request for banners to the City’s attention. In particular I want to single out David Martin of Goldworks who worked tirelessly on this issue. Also kudos should go to Barbara Ross of the Department of Planning and Zoning.”

Feedback on the banners can be emailed to the City Architect: tom.luebke@alexandriava.gov .
