City Council Considers New Solid Waste Management Plan

The Alexandria City Council will hold a public hearing regarding a new Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) on June 12 and will schedule the plan for adoption on June 22. The hearing will take place June 12 at 9:30 am in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 301 King St. The plan is scheduled to be adopted June 22 at 7 pm. The environmentally supportive new plan increases Alexandria’s recycling goal to 35% and includes plans to mandate recycling for commercial and multi-family properties later in FY 2005.

The proposed SWMP considers all elements of solid waste management and proposes appropriate integrated methods of providing necessary controls and services for effective and efficient management of all solid waste. An integrated solid waste management plan must provide for source reduction, reuse and recycling within a jurisdiction.

The SWMP continues the existing City’s solid waste collection, disposal and recycling systems, and sets a new City-wide recycling goal of 35%, up from the 25% goal in the current plan. The major policy change in this SWMP, as compared to the current plan, is the recommendation that recycling be mandated for commercial and multi-family (condo and apartment) residential properties. Alexandria is currently the only major jurisdiction in the Washington, D.C. area which does not have mandated commercial and multi-family recycling programs.
