FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 8, 2004 PIO 134-04 Second Thursdays Entertainment and Activities Held in Old Town The City of Alexandria joins the King Street Metro Enterprise Team (KSMET) and the Old Town Business Association (OTBA) in holding the Second Thursday in Old Town from Thursday, June 10 through Thursday, Sept. 9. Each and every second Thursday throughout the summer, the Old Town business district will offer Alexandrians free entertainment and fun activities. Area retailers will also extend store hours until 9 pm each second Thursday. Activities for the Second Thursday in Old Town will take place in the King Street corridor from the river to the King Street Metro and include: Thursday, June 10 The Dog Days of Early Summer With Canine River Cruises, Bear the Explosives Dog, and Madam Canina who reads paws to foretell doggie fortunes. Free doggie treats. Attendance is free. Cost for the Canine River Cruises is $8. Thursday, July 8 A Nightingale Sang in Market Square: Saluting WWII Veterans Canine River Cruises continue plus entertainment geared toward 1945. Get out your ration book and join your favorite “Rosie the Riveter” or “Yank” in Old Town to celebrate the end of the fighting. Attendance is free. Cost for the Canine River Cruises is $8. Thursday, Aug. 12 Family Fun in Old Town Each Second Thursday in Old Town is family-friendly, but this one features extra activities for the young and young at heart. Canine River Cruises continue. Attendance is free. Cost for the Canine River Cruises is $8. Thursday, Sept. 9 Alexandria Arts Mean Business On the Thursday before the Alexandria Festival of the Arts, enjoy a special celebration of Alexandria’s rich arts scene. Attendance is free. The Second Thursday in Old Town is designed to bring more Alexandrians and visitors to Old Town to discover and rediscover the area’s local retail wealth. Activities and entertainment will take place at King Street Gardens (the 1700 block of King St. at the intersection of Daingerfield Rd.), Commerce Park (the intersections of Commerce St., King St., and Fayette St.), the King St. side of Market Square, King St. and Union St. and at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center, 105 N.
