Reward Offered for Safe Return of Stolen Chihuahua;
Police Appeal for Possible Witnesses in Dog Theft

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is offering a $500 reward for the safe return of a Chihuahua who was stolen from the animal shelter last week. Jemma, an 8-month-old dog, was taken one week ago today and has not yet been found.

Police are urging potential witnesses to come forward. “It’s very possible that someone visiting the shelter last Thursday may have seen whoever took Jemma,” says Officer Donna Barnes, who is investigating the case. “Perhaps people looking to adopt a dog or cat themselves saw someone leave the shelter with Jemma and they were unaware that Jemma did not belong to whoever had her.”

Jemma was stolen from the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter at 4101 Eisenhower Avenue on Thursday, May 20, between noon and 6 p.m. She was discovered missing from a fenced run area and has not been seen since.

Jemma is black and tan and strongly resembles a Miniature Pinscher. She is approximately seven pounds and has short hair. She recently had surgery and should be seen by a vet. Though her stitches and shaved areas were quite visible a week ago, they may not be as noticeable now. Jemma is spayed and has a microchip which can be read by other shelters and many veterinary clinics.

Anyone knowing Jemma’s location is asked to call Alexandria police at 703.838.4444 or the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria at 703.838.4774.
