Alexandria to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Changes to Political Sign Rules

The City of Alexandria Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on May 4 at 7:30 pm in City Hall, 301 King St., to discuss proposed changes to the rules that govern where political signs can be posted within the City.

The City Council discussed the issue of political signs at a series of meetings last year following the May elections and asked staff to bring forward specific changes to the longstanding rules on political signs for consideration by the commission. The proposed changes would:

Change the amount of time signs are allowed to stay in the public rights-of-way from 90 days prior to an election to a period of 60 days.

Identify grass medians in the City where political signage is feasible and those areas placed on a map which is accessible at:

Restrict allowable signs to two signs per candidate per median island or linear median dimension of 200 feet, whichever is less.

Include language tying the forfeiture of the $100 bond for signs to compliance with all of the rules for political signs, not just the removal rules.

Include a requirement that candidates remove the sign posts as well as the sign, because the remaining posts are dangerous to City workers attempting to remove them and to City mowing machinery.

Change the prohibition of signs within 15 feet of an intersection or end of a median, to 50 feet of the end of a median on four lane roads.
