New Location Added to Photo Red Light Enforcement in Alexandria;
Camera Goes Live at Duke and West Taylor Run on March 31

The City of Alexandria is adding a fourth site to its photo red light enforcement efforts. For the first time since the program began more than six years ago, a new location is being equipped with a camera to catch red light runners. The location is at the intersection of Duke Street and West Taylor Run Parkway, where twelve serious accidents occurred in 2003. Enforcement begins Wednesday, March 31.

Since November of 1997, more than 56,000 violators have been fined $50 each after they were caught running red lights in Alexandria. Violations at the other intersections (Duke and South Walker streets, South Patrick and Gibbon streets, and Seminary Road and Mark Center Drive) have dropped significantly and accident rates also are down.

For further information, please contact Alexandria’s photo red light coordinator, Commander Daniel Gollhardt, at 703.838.4510.

Note: A photo of an accident caught on film appears below. The accident occurred at Duke and South Walker streets on February 22 when an SUV ran a red light and struck a sedan.
