Salute to Women Awards Banquet

A group of women who have made exceptional contributions to the City of Alexandria will be honored at the 24th Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet, hosted by the Alexandria Commission for Women and Office on Women. The banquet, held during Women’s History Month, will be on Monday evening, March 29 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, located at 625 First St. in Alexandria.

"The Salute to Women Awards Banquet in Alexandria is always a much anticipated event in Alexandria. Honoring the best and brightest women in our community is a pleasure for everyone who attends," said Laura Mandala, chair of the Commission for Women. Over 300 individuals regularly attend the awards ceremony.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception. A door prize will be given this year to one lucky winner. It is a seven-night resort RCI timeshare contributed by Mary K. Wharton of Century 21 New Millennium. Dinner and the awards presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Nominees include: Ann Evans Baynard, Suzanne S. Brock, Yvonne Byrd, Alisa Carrel, Diane Charles, Nancy Dunning, Julie Dyson, Judy Guse Noritake, Judith Louise Haskins, Athena “Bunny” Honduras, Julie N. Jakopic, Anne Kelly, Beth Lovain, Barbara Magid, Jodie Markowitz, Drema McAllister-Wilson, Heidi McGowen, Kathleen Padian, Rebecca L. Perry, Margarette Peterson, Diane Reese, Cheryl Ross-Audley, Justine Rowe, Elynn Simons, Jean Stuhl, Sandra Whitmore, Kathy Wilson, and Susan Wilson.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Martha Burk. Dr. Burk is a political psychologist and women’s equity expert who is co-founder and president of the Center for Advancement of Public Policy, a research and policy analysis organization in Washington, D.C.. She is also currently serving as the chair oft eh National Council of Women’s Organizations (NCWO), a network of nearly 200 national women’s groups collectively representing 10 million women. Dr. Burk was also named of one of Ms. Magazine’s 2004 Women of the Year.

Reservations for the 2004 Salute to Women Awards Banquet must be made by March 25 through the Office on Women, 703-838-5030. Ticket prices begin at $55. Those contributing above the ticket price are recognized in the event program.
