Animal Adoptions Hit a New High in Alexandria

In January, 155 animals were adopted from the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter - a new record for the City of Alexandria and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the organization that operates the Shelter.

The record was set in July with 142 adoptions. The record at the old Shelter on Payne Street was 125 adoptions in January 1993.

“The new facility on Eisenhower Avenue is much larger than the old Shelter and is able to house almost twice as many animals,” stated Tara Blot, League Executive Director. “Since moving here in May 2002, the number of animals we receive has increased and it’s wonderful to realize that the number of animals placed in homes has increased as well. Our new adoption record is a tribute to the dedicated staff, volunteers and the amazing support we receive from the community.”

In addition to dogs and cats, guinea pigs, birds, a ferret and a rabbit were adopted out in January into new, permanent homes. The League cares for homeless animals and places them in Alexandria and surrounding communities.

Hours of operation for the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter are:
Monday - Friday noon - 8 pm
Saturday & Sunday noon - 5 pm
Closed on Wednesday for animals viewing and adoptions.
