City of Alexandria to Propose Changes to Protect the Environment

The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will present the proposed amendments to the City’s Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance and changes to the City’s Resource Protection Area (RPA) map at the Environmental Policy Commission’s (EPC) public meeting on Feb. 23 in City Hall, 301 King St., Room 2000 at 7:30 pm. The changes are required to comply with amendments to Virginia Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Designation and Management Regulations. The City is taking this opportunity to make several other amendments to enhance environmental protection. Topics to be presented at the meeting include:

• Alexandria’s existing Environmental Management Ordinance and State regulatory requirements.
• Explanation of major amendments to the Environmental Management Ordinance.
• Results of the City’s stream mapping and classification project.
• Presentation of draft Resource Protection Area map and what it will mean to property owners.
• Proposed ordinance review and public input schedule.

The public is invited to learn more about these changes and to provide feedback.

The draft ordinance and RPA map will be available for distribution at the meeting. If you have questions about this project, please call Bill Skrabak, Chief, Division of Environmental Quality at 703.383.4334.
