Commission on Aging Seeks Nominations

The Alexandria Commission on Aging is seeking nominations for its annual awards program that honors Alexandrians who have demonstrated superior contributions in advancing issues and projects that favorably affect older Alexandrians. The first awards were presented in June, 1990. This year's awards will be announced in May.

Nominations may be made in three categories. The Annie B. Rose Lifetime Achievement Award identifies a resident of Alexandria whose exemplary volunteer achievements span a lifetime of public service, and whose achievements have been devoted to significantly enhancing the community, especially to advancing social justice and aging concerns, for all residents. Eligibility consists of Alexandrians who present evidence of not fewer than ten years of volunteer service advancing social justice and aging issues, and who have not previously won the Annie B. Rose Award.

The Lois Van Valkenburgh Excellence in Aging Award for an Individual identifies one volunteer who has made outstanding contributions to elevating the quality of life for older adults in Alexandria within the past year. Eligibility consists of Alexandria residents of any age who have not previously won this award, or the Excellence in Aging Award for an Individual.

The Excellence in Aging Award for an Organization identifies one organization that has made outstanding contributions to elevating the quality of life for older Alexandrians. Eligibility consists of Organizations that have not previously won an Excellence in Aging Award.

Anyone may submit a nomination. Nominators should type the nomination on the form available on the City’s website, www.ci.alexandria.va.us , or by calling 703.838.0927. Nominations must include three letters of endorsement and must be received by March 31.
