Free Tax Assistance for Low Income Alexandrians

A group of volunteers with extensive tax preparation expertise are available to assist low income Alexandrians to complete federal and state income tax forms. This free service will be available at the Alexandria Department of Human Services Center, 2525 Mount Vernon Ave. The sessions are every other Wednesday Jan. 28 through April 14, from 6 - 8 pm, and every Saturday Feb. 7 through April 10, except March 13, 9 am until noon. Spanish-speaking volunteers are also available.

This no-cost program allows low-income working families to keep their entire tax refund and helps them receive all the tax credits to which they are entitled through the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit and the Federal Child Tax Credit.

Individuals with income up to approximately $25,000 are eligible to receive help. Families are eligible with income up to approximately $35,000 or greater for larger families. Service is on a first come - first served basis. Those wanting help with tax preparation must bring W-2 forms and other income records, and records or receipts for expenses for childcare, education, or any additional income. They must also provide the social security numbers or ITINs for all dependents and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. Volunteers can also prepare prior year’s tax returns for filing. Electronic filing is offered so that taxpayers will receive refunds more quickly.

Community Tax Aid, Inc., an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization of accountants and lawyers in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, provides expert help on Saturdays. Refunds for Free in Metro D.C., a federal VITA program composed of trained volunteers, assists on Wednesdays.

Call 703.838.0768 for logistical information only.
