City of Alexandria Operates Fleet of Alternative-Fueled and Hybrid Vehicles

In an effort to improve air quality in the Washington metropolitan area, the City of Alexandria is operating a fleet of 12 alternative-fueled and hybrid vehicles that will be in service until 2006.

The City purchased 10 Honda Civic Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cars in addition to the two Toyota Prius Hybrid cars that were purchased in early 2003.

The Honda Civic CNG is a natural-gas vehicle, therefore it doesn’t use conventional gasoline and makes nearly zero emissions. In a highly-polluted urban area, the exhaust coming out of the tailpipe can actually be cleaner than the air outside.

The hybrid cars use advanced engineering to combine a gas engine with an electric motor to create an environmentally advanced, fuel-efficient, hybrid. The hybrid cars run on regular gasoline and never need to be plugged in for recharging. Once the electricity in the batteries gets low, the gasoline engine takes over and begins to recharge the batteries.
