City Council Approves Citizen Corps
For Emergency Preparedness Assistance

The Alexandria City Council approved on Dec. 8 the reconstitution of the Citizen Corps Council to increase citizen involvement in the emergency preparedness process.

The Citizen Corps will be charged with assisting the public in preparing for emergencies by obtaining residents’ input in the City’s overall disaster response. Tasks may include public emergency communication and education programs; identification of community groups, agencies and volunteers to participate in disaster relief efforts; and management of community resources for disaster, e.g. Chamber of Commerce and business partnerships, Interfaith Association, United Way, Salvation Army, etc.

Co-chairs of the Citizen Corps Council are Councilmembers Ludwig Gaines and Rob Krupicka. The City Manager will appoint the other nine members which will be one representative each from the Commission on Persons With Disabilities; the Commission on Aging; the Alexandria Chapter of the Red Cross; the Alexandria Interfaith Association; the Chamber of Commerce; the Alexandria Public Schools; and the Alexandria Emergency Medical Services Council; and two representatives designated by the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations (one from the east end of the City and one from the west end of the City). Residents throughout the City will be invited to provide input before the Citizen Corps Council submits a report to the City Council within one year of the Citizen Corps’ initial meeting.
