Art Thief Arrested in Maryland

Sharon J. Walker, wanted in Alexandria on multiple grand larceny charges, was arrested Sunday night by Mount Rainier (Md.) police. Walker, 46, was being sought for stealing paintings from galleries in Old Town Alexandria.

Walker was apprehended just after 11 p.m. on November 16. She is being held in at the Prince George’s County jail, pending extradition to Alexandria.

The Alexandria Police Department gratefully acknowledges the work of the Prince George’s County and Mount Rainier police departments in making this apprehension.

Walker is facing two Grand Larceny charges in Alexandria for the October 22 thefts from two art galleries, the Principle Gallery at 208 King Street and Studio Antiques at 524 North Washington Street. A security camera captured Walker entering Studio Antiques just before the theft.

Walker was identified after police received tips from the public who had recognized her on the security video which was shown on the local news.

Investigation continues into at least ten other thefts of paintings, sculptures and antiques from Old Town galleries which occurred in the past year. Additional charges may be filed.
