Alexandria Celebrates Opening of Foster Mentor Home

The Alexandria Department of Human Services is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Alexandria Division of Social Services’ (ADSS) Foster Mentor Home, 718 N. Columbus St., on Nov. 18 from 6 to 7:30 pm. The new facility will provide live-in supervision and support for foster care youth between the ages of 16 and 21, who are transitioning from the foster care system to adulthood.

Up to four foster youth will be served in the home at one time and they must be enrolled in an educational or vocational training program and employed. The ADSS Independent Living Coordinator meets weekly with the youth to offer consultation, feedback and independent living skills training in areas such as education and career planning.

On-site supervision is provided by an adult mentor who is approved in accordance with Virginia Department of Social Services and Interdepartmental regulations. The mentor provides daily supervision and demonstrates skills necessary for self-sufficiency in the community, and serves as an advocate for the youth. The youth will receive daily independent living services through hands-on training to include money management, housekeeping, food management, emergency and safety skills and interpersonal skills.

For more information, or to R.S.V.P. to the ribbon cutting ceremony, call 703.838.0867.
