Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for Nature Center and School

The groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation and expansion of the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center at 5700 Sanger Ave. is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 8:30 am. The event is co-sponsored by the City Council and School Board and the public is invited.

The renovation will create an expanded facility with enlarged exhibit, office, and storage space, a community meeting room, a greenhouse, and a science lab. Nine new classrooms will replace existing classroom space. The center is adjacent to the elementary school.

The center offers year-round programs and exhibits on natural history and operates under the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities. The nature center’s staff offices have relocated to the Lee Center at 1108 Jefferson St., until the construction’s expected completion in 2004.

For more information on the center, please contact Kirk Kincannon, Deputy Director, at 703.838.4343, or visit the website at www.ci.alexandria.va.us/recreation.
