Alexandria property owners are reminded: if you received a real estate tax bill in the mail for the City which your mortgage company is responsible for paying, you should immediately contact your mortgage company and have them arrange to pay the bill. Due to the unprecedented number of home mortgage refinancings in recent months, several mortgage companies and their tax agents have not notified the City’s Treasury Division of who is responsible for paying the real estate taxes on some properties for which the mortgage companies may be holding an escrow tax account. Therefore, the City is not aware of who is responsible for remitting the tax payment to the City for those properties. As a result, the City forwarded the real estate tax bills (which are due on Nov.15) directly to the property owners, who ultimately have the responsibility for making sure real estate taxes are paid. The City believes that there are about 1,300 properties affected, out of some 39,428 properties in the City.

For additional information, contact the City’s Treasury Division at 703.838.4777. Late payment penalty and interest will be waived if this escrow account notification failure by the mortgage companies results in a late payment of the real estate taxes, as long as the taxes are paid before the end of calendar year 2003.
