Alexandria Police Arrest Scholarship Fund Director for Embezzlement

Alexandria detectives have charged the executive director of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria with Embezzlement of Public Funds. Sandra O. Heningburg, 62, was arrested today at police headquarters after turning herself in.

Police learned of the theft in early August when scholarship fund officials alerted police to discrepancies in their financial accounts. Through investigation and with cooperation from the board of trustees, Heningburg was identified as the suspect. Police believe Heningburg embezzled approximately $1,300 from scholarship fund accounts between March and July of this year.

Heningburg was hired as executive director in 2001 by the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). She has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case and an internal investigation by ACPS.

Heningburg resides at 260 South Reynolds Street in Alexandria. She was released from the Alexandria jail late this morning on a $1,000 bond.
