Torpedo Factory Artists to Help Alexandria’s
At-Risk Children Through Generous Donations

Torpedo Factory artists have forged a partnership with The Fund for Alexandria’s Child in an effort to raise funds which will help at-risk and foster children throughout Alexandria. Led by Marian Van Landingham, the founder of the Torpedo Factory Art Center and a delegate from Alexandria to the General Assembly, more than 20 artists have generously donated original works of art to The Fund. The donated works of art include watercolors, silkscreens, acrylics, sculptures, oil paintings, and etchings and have a retail value from $55 to $240.

These pieces will be part of The Fund’s silent auction during An Evening at the Theatre which benefits The Fund for Alexandria’s Child. The Fund benefits children in foster care and other at-risk children in Alexandria. The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Little Theatre of Alexandria, 600 Wolfe St., in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria.

“As artists, we feel strong ties to our community,” said Delegate Van Landingham. “We are pleased to have this opportunity to share our gifts with children in our town who are in a crisis.”

The event will include a gala reception and silent auction at 6 p.m., immediately followed by the performance of “The Teahouse of the August Moon,” at 8 p.m. “The Teahouse of the August Moon” is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony Award and the Critics’ Circle Award, and is considered to be one of the most successful plays of the modern theater.

“We are privileged to band together to help children in a crisis in our own community. Every cent we raise will go directly to the kids,” said Joan Beach, chairperson of the event for the Advisory Council for The Fund for Alexandria’s Child. “An Evening at the Theatre promises to be a great combination of friendly, competitive bidding on wonderful objects of art, luxurious services and meals at our best restaurants, local theater at its best, and a lovely reception featuring refreshments by local favorites. We are especially excited about our partnership with the artists of the Torpedo Factory, who are offering more than 21 original pieces for the auction.”

The Fund for Alexandria’s Child offers children in foster care, and those youngsters who are at risk of abuse or neglect, the opportunity to experience some of the activities that other children often take for granted. The Fund allows them to have meaningful and rewarding experiences such as school field trips, scouting, music or art lessons, summer camp, and the purchase of a cap and gown for graduation, for example, that are not covered by any other funding source.

Group rates are available. Tickets are $25. For more information about this event, The Fund for Alexandria’s Child, or to reserve tickets, contact Suzanne Kratzok, Coordinator of Community Resources, at suzanne.kratzok@ci.alexandria.va.us or call 703.838.0768.
