Personal Property Tax Bills Being Mailed to City Residents

Beginning Monday, Aug. 4, personal property tax bills will be mailed to City residents. The tax bills are for both businesses and vehicles. Payment must be received or postmarked by Monday, Oct. 6, 2003. This year, the City is mailing more than 5,900 bills to business owners and more than 102,000 bills to vehicle owners.

Citizens may pay taxes by doing one of the following:
• Mailing a check with both halves of the bill to the Treasurer’s Office

• Paying at any SunTrust Bank branch in the City

• Paying in person at the Treasury Division, City Hall, Room 1510, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, except holidays

• Paying with their Discover/Novus card in person at the Treasury Division

• Paying with their Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover/Novus card 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 1.800.272.9829, or online at http://ci.alexandria.va.us. A convenience fee determined by the amount of the transaction will be assessed by the Official Payments Corporation for using this service. The city’s jurisdiction code is 1007.

Name and address changes should be indicated on both halves of the bill and returned with payment. If the vehicle information is incorrect, or if an individual has moved from the City, please contact 703.838.4560 or P.O. Box 178, Alexandria, Va. 22313 before the due date.

If a vehicle was not timely registered within the City during 2003, a late filing penalty of 5 percent of the net 2003 tax due, or $10, whichever is greater, is included on this personal property tax bill. The late filing penalty may not exceed the net 2003 tax due.

The penalty for late payment is 10 percent of the net 2003 tax due plus the late filing penalty, or $10, whichever is greater. However, the late payment penalty may not exceed the sum of the tax and the late filing penalty. Additionally, interest will be assessed on any unpaid tax and penalties at an annual rate of 10 percent the first year and 5 percent each year thereafter, beginning Oct. 7, 2003.

For more information on payments and late penalties, call 703.838.4777.
