Alexandria Police Charge Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting;
Gunman Wounded by Off-Duty Officer in April

Today, Alexandria detectives charged a 27-year-old Alexandria man with Attempt Felonious Assault on a Police Officer for a shooting on April 19. Richard Corey Sellers was charged with a shooting at an accident scene in the 700 block of North Jordan Street. An off-duty officer responded to the scene and when Sellers fired a handgun after refusing the officer’s order to disarm, he was shot.

The suspect, who is known as Corey Sellers, had been at Washington Hospital Center since then. Sellers was released from the hospital on Monday and arrested today at a family member’s home in Lorton. He is being held without bond at the Alexandria jail.

The incident began as an accident when Sellers, driving a Lexus SC 300, rear-ended a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck with two occupants. Sellers exited the Lexus and some moments later, with fire and rescue personnel on the scene, he began firing a handgun.

An off-duty officer who was in the area ran to aid the firefighters. The officer and a firefighter attempted to restrain Sellers but he broke away and began shooting again. At this point, the officer fired his duty weapon and struck Sellers. The officer then secured Sellers and the weapon. No one else was injured.

The officer, Deputy Chief Joseph R. Hilleary, is a 33-year veteran who oversees the department’s Field Operations Bureau. He has since returned to full-duty.
