Alexandria to Receive Contribution from Friends of Rocky Versace

The Friends of Rocky Versace, a group of friends who knew the fallen Vietnam War hero and posthumous Medal of Honor recipient, will present a check for $7,000 to the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities on Tuesday, June 24 at noon at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave.

The funds will be used to purchase computers for individuals using the recreation center. The Friends of Rocky Versace organized a recent golf tournament to raise the funds.

Captain Rocky Versace, who lived in the Del Ray area, was captured in 1963, less than two weeks before he was scheduled to leave southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He remained in captivity until his death in 1965.

Last July, the City dedicated the Captain Rocky Versace Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, the result of a public/private fund-raising partnership. The plaza is located adjacent to the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center.
