Alexandria's Farmers’ Market
Is Center of Saturday Morning Activities

Visit Alexandria's Market Square on any Saturday morning and you'll find yourself in a bustling plaza where farmers sell local produce and flowers, artists display their crafts, and Alexandria residents and visitors come to enjoy a taste of time-old simplicity and a connection with Alexandria's past.

The Alexandria Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays year round from 5 to 10 am.. Parking is free in the garage underneath Market Square, 301 King St., during the hours of the Farmer's Market

Established in 1753, Old Town Alexandria's Market Square is thought to be the site of one of the nation's oldest continually operating farmers’ markets. During his presidency, George Washington sent wagons of produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at the Market Square site. Shopping at the Market was the primary way residents of Alexandria obtained their meat, dairy, fish, fruits and vegetables.

Today, the Farmer's Market provides an opportunity for Alexandrians to discover the City's history and to participate in an ongoing local and national tradition. According to an article in the September 18, 1876 edition of the Alexandria Gazette, some things have not changed because "to sell it here you've got to grow it or make it at home."
