Alexandria Marina Upgraded and Remodeled

The City of Alexandria Marina has been recently upgraded and remodeled just in time for the summer season. The marina, which is located at the end of King Street behind the Torpedo Factory Art Center and the southeast tip of Founders Park, is surrounded by parks, walking/bike trails, restaurants, shops, historic sites, and is host to summer concerts.

The first major improvement at the marina was the addition of a dry standpipe fire suppression system. The new system allows the Fire Department to connect a water hose on the piers every 75 feet. Under the old system, the Fire Department lost valuable time connecting hoses to fire hydrants on the street and dragging them down to the marina.

Upgrades also included replacement of the old, splintering wooden decks and gazebos with a trek decking system. Composed of wood and plastic, the new deck will require less maintenance and last 20 to 25 years. Using regular wood, the deck surface splinters and comes apart within five years.

For boating enthusiasts, the Alexandria marina is only a three mile cruise from Washington, D.C. and Maryland. In addition to affording a spectacular view of the Potomac River, the City Marina has 62 boat slips plus additional short-term docking space on sea walls and adjacent areas. The City Marina offers docking for pleasure boats and commercial vessels. For boaters who wish to stay over night, restroom and shower facilities are available.

The Marina will house many boats during the upcoming Waterfront Festival on June 13, 14, and 15 at nearby Oronoco Bay. For more information about the City marina or upcoming activities scheduled along the waterfront, call 703.838.4265.
