Alexandria to Host Public Hearing on
Residential Care Home

The City Council will host a public hearing on May 17 at City Hall, 301 King St., regarding the use of the Alexandria Residential Care Home facility, 716 and 718 N. Columbus St., once it is closed. The hearing will be held as part of the City Council’s regular Saturday meeting, which begins at 9:30 am.

Three situations contribute to the home’s closing. Many of the recent referrals to the house, such as those with severe dementia, require services that the home is unable to provide; the facility is not well suited for frail or elderly residents with mobility issues; and the home is not a cost-efficient approach for assisted living when compared to other alternatives.

Two alternative options were presented as a part of the City Manager’s recommendations to the City Council. The first recommendation was restoring the facility into two townhouses and selling them through the City’s Homeownership Assistance Program or the Moderate Income Homeownership Program. The second recommendation was a Mentor Foster Home Program operated by the Department of Human Services. The program would serve four youth between the ages of 18 and 21 in foster care with live-in supervision by an adult mentor.

The City Council will also hear comments on any other proposed alternative use and then decide which ideas to have the City Manager pursue.
