Alexandria Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting;
Off-Duty Officer Wounds Shooting Suspect at Accident Scene

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting in the West End of Alexandria. Today, at 6:46 p.m., police received a call for a traffic accident in the 700 block of North Jordan Street. There was an updated report of an armed subject at the scene, and an off-duty Alexandria police officer in the area immediately responded. The subject, according to witnesses, began firing a handgun.

Upon arrival, the officer observed the suspect with the gun and fired his service weapon, a Glock .40-caliber, striking the suspect. The officer and others responding to the scene secured the suspect and the suspect’s weapon.

The suspect, a man whose identity is not yet confirmed, was transported by helicopter to Washington Hospital Center. He is undergoing surgery. The officer, a 33-year veteran, was not injured. His name is not being released at this time.

Initial investigation indicates that two vehicles were involved in an accident. The suspect vehicle, a Lexus SC 300, rear-ended a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck on North Jordan Street. A man exited the Lexus and started shooting. The other motorist and his passenger were not injured.

Both the Criminal Investigations Section and the Internal Investigations Unit are conducting investigations into the shooting. The officer will be assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigations.
