Alexandria Recognizes City Employees
for Outstanding Public Service

Nearly 350 City employees were honored on April 14 for five years or more of service to the City of Alexandria. Also honored were 34 employees who retired in 2002. On hand to recognize employees were Mayor Kerry Donley, Vice Mayor William Cleveland and Councilmembers Del Pepper and David Speck and City Manager Phil Sunderland.

The current employee recognized with the most years of service is Gladys Davis, City Library, for 55 years. Others with major years of contribution are Lillian Meadows, Finance, 45 years, and Richard Schick, T&ES, 40 years.

Seven employees received recognition for 35 years of service. They were William Ledbetter, General Services; Alfred Matthews, Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities; Arlene Pegues, Library; Edward Prokop, Sheriff; David Shepherd, Police; Alice Stoner, Library; and Donovan Upchurch, Fire.

Many other employees were acknowledged for 30, 25, 20, 25, 10, and five years of service.

Of the employees who retired in 2002, the employee with the most years of service was Wanda Dowell, Office of Historic Alexandria, with 38 years.
